AI AUTOMATION

Why I Believe Every Business Will Be AI-First by 2027

Every few years, a technology arrives that quietly redraws the line between the businesses that lead and the businesses that follow. The internet did it. Mobile did it. Cloud did it. Artificial intelligence is doing it right now, and faster than any of them.

I have spent my career at the intersection of marketing, strategy and growth, from boardrooms and accounting networks to the stage at UN Women CSW69 and Accountex. Today, as Founder and CEO of Orion Global Consulting, I work with more than 100 clients across eight countries. And from where I stand, one conclusion has become impossible to ignore: by 2027, every business that intends to stay competitive will be AI-first.

Not “using a bit of AI”. Not “experimenting with ChatGPT”. AI-first. Here is why I believe that, and what it means for you.

What “AI-First” Actually Means

Being AI-first does not mean replacing people with machines. It means that when a business designs a process, serves a customer, or makes a decision, the first question is: how can AI make this faster, smarter or more personal?

An AI-first business:

  • Builds AI into its everyday workflows, not as a bolt-on tool used by one enthusiastic employee
  • Uses data to anticipate what customers need before they ask
  • Frees its people from repetitive work so they can focus on relationships, creativity and judgement
  • Treats AI capability as a core business skill, in the same way it treats finance or sales

The Evidence: Adoption Is Accelerating, Not Levelling Off

The numbers tell a striking story. According to the British Chambers of Commerce’s Future of Work: AI in the Workplace report (March 2026), 54% of UK SMEs are now actively adopting AI, up from 35% in 2025, 25% in 2024 and 23% in 2023. In other words, adoption has more than doubled in just two years.

The same research found that firms already deploying AI report net productivity expectations of +71%, while firms with no plans to adopt sit at -3%. That gap is the story of the next decade in a single statistic. The businesses moving now are pulling away; the ones waiting are standing still while the ground moves beneath them.

And importantly, 95% of SMEs using AI reported no change in workforce size. AI is not emptying offices. It is making the people in them more capable.

Five Reasons I Believe 2027 Is the Tipping Point

1. The tools have become accessible to everyone

Two years ago, meaningful AI required specialist developers and serious budgets. Today, a five-person accounting practice can deploy an AI CRM and automation, automated email marketing and AI-assisted content in weeks, not months. When the barrier to entry disappears, adoption stops being optional.

2. Customers have already changed their expectations

Your clients now use AI in their own lives every day. They expect instant answers, personalised communication and seamless experiences. They are also increasingly discovering businesses through AI assistants and AI search rather than traditional search. If your business is not visible, credible and responsive in an AI-driven world, your clients will find someone who is.

3. The productivity gap compounds

A business that saves ten hours a week through automation does not just save ten hours. It reinvests them in sales, service and strategy. Over a year, that advantage compounds into better margins, faster growth and stronger client relationships. By 2027, the gap between AI-first firms and the rest will be too wide to close quickly.

4. Talent wants to work with modern tools

The next generation of professionals, many of whom I meet through my work with universities and apprenticeship programmes, expect to work alongside AI. Businesses that cling to manual processes will struggle not only to compete for clients, but to attract and keep the best people.

5. The cost of waiting is now higher than the cost of acting

For a long time, caution felt sensible. “Let’s see how it develops” was a reasonable position. That window has closed. Every month of delay is a month in which competitors are learning, refining and building data advantages that are very hard to catch up with.

What I See Every Day With Clients

At Orion Global Consulting, we built our approach around one belief: AI should serve strategy, not replace it. The transformations I see are rarely dramatic overnight changes. They are practical, measurable shifts:

  • Accounting firms using AI automation and AI-powered lead generation to fill their pipeline consistently, rather than relying on referrals alone
  • Professional services businesses cutting proposal and onboarding time dramatically with automated workflows
  • Hospitality and e-commerce brands producing more personalised content and campaigns with the same team
  • Leaders making faster decisions because their data finally tells a clear story

The common thread? Every one of these businesses started with a clear goal, not a tool. That is the difference between AI as a gimmick and AI as a growth engine.

How to Become AI-First Before 2027

If you are wondering where to begin, here is the roadmap I share with business owners:

  1. Start with the problem, not the technology. Identify the three tasks that cost your team the most time or the processes where you lose the most opportunities.
  2. Audit your data. AI is only as good as the information it works with. Clean, organised client and sales data is your foundation.
  3. Pick one quick win. Automate a single workflow, such as lead follow-up, client onboarding or content creation, and measure the result.
  4. Invest in your people. Train your team to use AI confidently. Adoption fails when people feel threatened; it succeeds when they feel empowered.
  5. Build governance early. Set clear rules on data privacy, accuracy and brand voice so AI strengthens trust rather than risking it.
  6. Scale what works. Once a pilot proves its value, roll it out across the business and move on to the next opportunity.

The Human Advantage in an AI-First World

I want to be clear: I do not believe AI makes people less important. I believe it makes the most human qualities more valuable than ever. Empathy, creativity, judgement, leadership and trust cannot be automated. The businesses that win in 2027 will be the ones that use AI to handle the routine, so their people can focus on what truly matters: understanding clients and building relationships.

That is the future I am working towards with every client, every talk and every project.

The Question Is Not “If”, but “How Fast”

By 2027, being AI-first will not be a competitive advantage. It will be the baseline. The real question for every business leader today is simple: will you shape this shift, or will it shape you?
